AMATYC SUMMER INSTITUTE 2024 – Active Learning

Teaching for Prowess (TfP): Increasing Students Success in Community College Mathematics Through Active Learning and Systemic Instructional Change
The Teaching for PROWESS (TfP) project is pleased to announce the AMATYC Summer Institute focused on active learning to be held in Portland, Oregon on June 20–22, 2024. The event is partially sponsored by the TfP project and is open to mathematics faculty at two-year institutions. College teams (preferably four people per college) are invited to apply to attend the Summer Institute focused on active learning in the STEM pathway. Topics include:
- Principles of active learning
- Existing models of active learning
- Student engagement with rich mathematical tasks and with their peers
(Building Thinking Classrooms, by Liljedahl) - Instructor’s use of student thinking as a resource for learning
(5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions, by Smith and Stein)
- Student engagement with rich mathematical tasks and with their peers
- Equitable and inclusive teaching practices to close the opportunity gap
- Developing equitable course learning outcomes
- Creating a culturally relevant curriculum in mathematics courses
- Creating a welcoming environment for the multiple identities learners bring to the classroom
- Modernizing the mathematics curriculum
- Supporting instructional and departmental level change
ELIGIBILITY
Faculty members (preferably 4) from a college’s mathematics department who are members of AMATYC that are interested in infusing active learning into their mathematics courses and inspiring transformation of the department .
COST
- Each college must pay a fee of $800 for workshop support (due 2 months prior to Summer Institute)
- The Teaching for PROWESS project will pay for airfare (up to $600 per person), four nights of accommodations (double occupancy rooms), Wednesday evening reception, breakfast and lunch (workshop days), and all supplies
- Colleges or participants will be required to pay for any additional night(s)’ stays, evening meals, travel to and from the airports, and optional pre- and post-Summer Institute tours and excursions
REQUIREMENTS
- Colleges must apply as a team of preferably 4 faculty members
- Faculty must be members of AMATYC
- Faculty must commit to
- Completing pre-work (2-5 hours)
- Attending all in-person sessions in June 20-22, 2024
- Attending follow-up Virtual Sessions (at least three of five 2-hour sessions throughout the 2024-2025 academic year)
- Completing surveys

Requirements* – You and your team must agree to:
- Complete pre-work in preparation of the Institute;
- Actively participate in the Summer Institute in its entirety from June 20-22, 2024;
- Participate in virtual professional development sessions over the next year;
- Complete follow-up survey in June 2025.
